A member of both the Maine and New Hampshire bars, John is the senior lawyer in the firm's business department. He advises both small and large businesses in all facets of their operations. John has extensive experience in the sale and purchase of businesses, bank financing, venture capital transactions, negotiation of contracts, and general business advice. He chairs the firm's Business Transactions, Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate Finance, Forest Products, and Healthcare practice groups. Mr. Upton is a shareholder/director of Perkins Thompson and a member of the firm's Executive Committee.

John has received an "A" rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and is a past member of the Maine Bar Association's Board of Governors.

John has served as Vice President and trustee of the Portland Museum of Art, and is a member of the museum Board of Fellows. Nordic skiing is a particular passion; John is President of the New England Nordic Ski Association and is a coach of the Cape Elizabeth High School Nordic Ski Team.

John is married to Anne Stockmar Upton and lives in Cape Elizabeth with their children, Cecily and Ted.
